Mahjong Glossary
Basic Terms:
Chi 「チー」 To steal a tile from the player on your left to a three-straight.
Chonbo 「チョンボ」 A player who violates the rules so that a re-deal is necessary pays the other players a penalty sum worth Mangan.
Dora 「ドラ」 The random tile(s) that each are worth an extra Han.
Han/Fu 「翻/府」 The scale by which hands are graded (ie. a hand worth 3 Han 40 Fu)
Kan 「槓」 To add the fourth tile to a three-of-a-kind set.
Pon 「ポン」 To steal a tile from someone to a three-of-a-kind set.
Ron 「ロン」 To win by finishing with the last tile someone discarded. The player who discarded the winning tile pays the winner everything.
Tenpai 「聴牌」 To be one tile away from a finished hand.
Tsumo 「ツモ」 To win by drawing the last tile from the wall. You win a certain percent of money from each player.
     
Hand Values: (Basic/Dealer)
Mangan 「満貫」 4-5 Han, 8000/12000 points.
Haneman 「跳満」 6-7 Han, 12000/18000 points.
Baiman 「倍満」 8-10 Han, 16000/24000 points.
Sanbaiman 「三倍満」 11-12 Han, 24000/36000 points.
Yakuman 「役満」 13 Han, 32000/48000 points.
     
Hand Types:
Reach 「立直」 You declare that you're one tile away from a finished hand. This locks your hand down. (1 Han)
Ippatsu 「一発」 This is awarded when you win on the first four turns after declaring Reach. A Pon/Chi/Kan from another player cancels Ippatsu. (1 Han)
Pinfu 「平和」 Your hand is composed of 4 three-straights and a valueless pair. The winning tile is required to finish a two-sided wait. "The basic hand." (1 Han)
Tanyao 「断幺九」 A hand composed of only inside (numbers 2-8) tiles. (1 Han)
Iipeiko 「一盃口」 A hand with two identical three-straights. (1 Han)
Chanta 「全帯幺九」 All sets contain terminals or honours. (2 Han)
Junchan 「純全帯幺九」 All sets contain terminals. (3 Han)
Sanshiki / Sanshoku 「三色同順」 A hand with three three-straights of the same numerical sequence, one of each suit. (2 Han)
Ittsu 「一通貫」 A hand with three consecutive three-straights of the same suit. (2 Han)
Chi Toitsu 「七対子」 Hand with seven different pairs. (2 Han)
Honitsu 「混一色」 Hand with tiles from only one of the three suits, in combination with honours. (3 Han)
Chinitsu 「清一色」 Hand composed entirely of tiles from only one of the three suits. (6 Han)
Kokushi Muso 「国士無双」 Hand with one of each of the 13 different terminal and honour tiles plus one extra terminal or honour tile. (13 Han)
Daisangen 「大三元」 A hand with three three-of-a-kind sets of the three Color tiles. (13 Han)
Su Anko 「四暗刻」 A concealed hand with four concealed three-of-a-kind sets. (13 Han)
Shosushi 「小四喜」 A hand with three three-of-a-kind sets of winds of and a pair of winds. (13 Han)
Daisushi 「大四喜」 A hand with four three-of-a-kind sets of winds. (13 Han or Double Yakuman, depending on the rules)
Churen Poto 「九連宝燈」 A hand consisting of the tiles 1112345678999 in the same suit plus any one extra tile of the same suit. (13 Han)
Ryu Iso 「緑一色」 A Hand composed entirely of green tiles: 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 Sou and Hatsu. (13 Han)
Tsu Iso 「字一色」 A hand composed entirely of honour tiles. (13 Han)
Tenho 「天和」 The dealer wins on his first turn. (13 Han)
Chiho 「地和」 A non-dealer player wins on his first turn. (13 Han)
